Virtual Offices

The Evolving 21st Century Virtual Office

I came across an interesting find this morning — and it’s just around the corner. Citrix Online is offering a free, live Webcast on August 26 at 2 p.m. EST. Here’s an overview:

“The evolving workplace definitely has people talking. Terms like ‘workshifting,’ ‘Web commuting’ and the ‘virtual office’ are making regular appearances in the news. Whatever you call it, the traditional 9-to-5 office environment is changing shape in response to new technology, a struggling economy and employees who place a premium on flexibility.”

Citrix couldn’t be more right. This caught my attention because we recently did a series on the office of the future. This picks up where we left off to take a look at how the virtual office is evolving.

Of course, Citrix is a technology company so they are going to show you how their technologies play into this theme. Citrix Onlineoffers some great products, including GoToMeeting (online interactive meeting software), GoToWebinar (webinar software), GoToMyPC (the ability to access your PC from anywhere) and GoToAssist (a remote support service). Its latest product is GoView, which allows you to record, edit and share content.

But even if you aren’t in the market to subscribe to any of these services, you should attend this webinar if you’re interested in seeing what’s next for the virtual office. Jane Anderson, member of the Worldwide Workplace Council and director of the Midwest Institute for Telecommuting Education, is going to talk about why changing the way your team works can increase your competitive edge, efficiency and performance.

Here’s what they promise you’ll learn:

  • How the workplace is evolving and the implications for your business
  • Why your company should embrace the virtual office
  • How to avoid the top 5 telework thinking traps

Of course, because it’s a Citrix Online deal, you’ll also get a pitch on how Web-based remote access enables you to “easily and cost effectively connect employees to corporate resources from any location.” But again, it’s worth listening. Maybe you’ll decide you need to leverage these resources after all. With the Software-as-a-Service subscription model, it’s much less expensive than you might think.

Thanks for the heads up. I’d love to go to this seminar on the evolution of the virtual office. How timely! I think we all need to learn to do more with less, whether we’re large corporations or at-home businesses. The bottom line is these virtual office tools are just as valuable for people at large companies as they are for small businesses. I can’t wait to learn more…

Of course they want you to buy their products. But Citrix Online has a good strategy. They do plenty of advertising on TV. This is the educational side of their marketing arm. Showing folks what’s going on beyond the four walls of their office can be eye opening. When it comes to virtual office solutions, these are some of the best, most affordable I’ve seen out there.

I was intrigued by the top five telework thinking traps. I wonder what those could be…probably a fancy way of referring to misconceptions about telework. Webinars like these are a great service to the virtual office industry. Virtual office providers should be teaming up with the Citrix Onlines of the world do offer discounts to their customers.

Citrix Online is great. I love GoToMeeting. I agree that companies of any size can get value from this type of solution. The virtual office is really enabled by this type of technology. I don’t know what we did before we had webinars and chat and all this sort of stuff. Now you can even access your PC from a computer somewhere else. That’s really amazing to me.

This really flows with the office of the future series… this ties in as “virtual office of the future.” Actually, it’s not even really the future — it’s now for a lot of companies. I mean, these tools may not quiet be mainstream yet, but there are a growing number of entrepreneurs looking for affordable virtual office technologies.
