Inc. Magazine Editors Explore Virtual Work

OK, so this isn’t exactly directly connected with executive office suites or virtual office space, but it does signal a trend that both industries should pay close attention to: telecommuting.

Inc. magazine’s staff is underway with a virtual workplace experiment during February. That means its editors will work from home, co-working spaces, hotels and cafes. I am betting they’ll find that the editors are more productive and less stressed. What do you think? Especially the ones that work from home.

Inc. isn’t rushing into this blindly. Inc. Senior Writer Max Chafkin told Folio magazine that magazine staff talked to experts in the field of organizational behavior, as well as entrepreneurs who believe in virtual work, before launching the experiment. The Inc. crew also took surveys of their work habits, downloaded new software on their computers and smartphones, and created checklists that aim to help them collaborate from afar, Chafkin said.

Inc. editors are going to blog about the experience along the way, then publish an article on the pros and cons of virtual work and distributed workforces. I’ll be looking forward to that one. However the article comes out, one thing is certain… there is more and more attention being put on virtual workers – and that’s ultimately good thing for our industry.

I saw that article about Inc. magazine also. I think this sort of publicity really helps spur virtual offices. Of course, if it wasn’t a real trend to begin with you probably wouldn’t see Inc. writing about it in the first place. One feeds the other. Virtual workers, virtual offices, coworking… it’s all here to stay and rising in popularity.

I am sure Inc. will do a good job spelling out the pros and cons of telecommuting — and I bet there will be different perspectives from the different editors. Some may really enjoy it and see mostly upsides of virtual officing. Others might not like it, for whatever reason, and report mostly cons. Can’t wait to see the Inc. article!

According to todays article in CNN http://bit.ly/973n0f about “90,000 to 150,000 jobs lost to the weather” I’m sure they are looking pretty smart and making other companies wishing they had started this a long time ago. Only wish they would call it webcommuting rather that telecommuting.
