WorkScapes at Newport Beach Hosts E-Cycling Event

WorkScapes at Newport Beach is putting a new twist on eco-friendly serviced offices. The Newport Beach, California-based alternative office space provider has organized its first E-Cycle Day on Friday, December 4.

WorkScapes has arranged for a collection truck to be on site from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to pick up old electronics from tenants – at no cost to the tenant. Tenants can safely get rid of electronic devices from the homefront or the workplace. The list of recyclable items includes computer equipment, stereos, televisions, and cameras.

“If it has a plug, we’ll take it,” says Ryan Gaya, vice president of DC Environmental, the company that’s coordinating the event for WorkScapes at Newport Beach. “The last thing a tenant wants to hear is ‘thanks, but no thanks,’ which is why our vendor takes everything, even alkaline batteries, despite it being a costlier venture for them. That’s one of the ways we provide better customer service.”

Recycling Electronics the Easy Way

What happens to the electronics? Good question. First, the TVs, computers and other items are disassembled and the components are separated into individual categories. If the components are obsolete, they are recycled to extract their precious metal values. The plastic parts are sold to plastic grinders. And components that are in good working condition are sold as spare parts to electronic wholesalers.

If you are worried about data theft, don’t be.

“All hard drives are degaussed in a high voltage magnetic field which renders them useless, and holes are drilled into the plates to destroy their surfaces. Media and software are then shredded and ground up at a California state registered recycler,” explains Gaya. “Our process gives people peace of mind.”

An Eco-Friendly Office Provider

The E-Cycling event at WorkScapes at Newport Beach is part of a larger, multi-faced, go-green campaign being implemented at the office park, and in addition to the comprehensive recycling and e-cycling program, includes green demolition and green cleaning, as well as tenant education.

Stay tuned for more from this company on the environmentally friendly office space front.

This company WorkScapes has jumped on the green bandwagon big time. I wonder if this is just a marketing gimmick or if the owners are really green-minded. These days, it’s sort of hard to tell. There are so many office space providers pushing the green envelope. I think if it’s just for marketing purposes it might not last. But if it comes from firm convictions that offices should be environmentally-friendly, the program is well-rounded and long-term.

A lot of office developers push the green education because it saves them money in energy costs. I think the true dedication to green office space is visible when a developer makes an actual investment in tools and technologies that qualify as eco-friendly. I think electronics pick up programs are great, but what are offices doing to reduce the carbon footprint?
