DURHAM, N.C. – The American Underground @ Main is the latest entrepreneurial coworking office space to put a stake in university ground, so to speak.
Located in Downtown Durham, this alternative office space offers coworking facilities that aim to help startup businesses perform their day-to-day operations, while creating a supportive environment.
Operating as one of North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) first off-site facilities, the Entrepreneur Lab in The American Underground @ Main opens the door for business school students to gain real world experience working with Durham entrepreneurs to advance their startups – with the guidance of NCCU faculty.
“We are excited about this incredible opportunity for our students to further engage with local entrepreneurs and develop their own ideas about business ventures they desire to pursue,” says D. Keith Pigues, dean of the School of Business. “We are successful if more students launch successful new businesses that employ people, generate tax revenue for the state of North Carolina and create wealth for our students and their families.”
Here’s how it works: NCCU students will engage in projects and internships with startup businesses in an entrepreneurial environment. NCCU is expecting the experiential learning to better prepare students for their own entrepreneurial ventures and other career opportunities. All of these activities will take place in the storefront offices along the historic Main Street in Durham.
More often, we’re seeing universities give a coworking twist to entrepreneurial incubators. School of Business Entrepreneur-in-Residence Ed Weems, along with other faculties, will offer companies in The American Underground @ Main expertise and counsel to help them succeed.
“To have the opportunity at the Underground where students have a physical space to come and work, where they can engage with faculty off campus is really important,” says American Underground Chief Strategist Adam Klein. “Being able to rub shoulders with up to 75 companies in both American Underground and Underground @ Main day in and day out is exciting.”
