Servcorp Takes on Regus with Chicago Office Space
Published March 9th, 2010 by Jennifer LeClaire
There’s been plenty of talk about Servcorp expanding into key cities across the United States – now we’re finally seeing some action.
The global serviced office company just opened the doors to its first-ever U.S.-based executive suites project. The first location is (drum roll, please) Chicago. Servcorp is introducing itself to entrepreneurs and businesses in the Windy City at a location on North Wacker Drive in the West End of the Loop precinct of Chicago’s downtown business district. Servcorp will reside on the 42nd floor of a 46-story building on the Chicago River’s banks.
Should Regus be worried? Hardly. Regus has 15 locations in Chicago, and another 14 serviced office locations in Chicago suburbs. But this is definitely a sign that Servcorp is throwing down the gauntlet in the U.S. executive suites arena. There’s been talk that the company will open 12 new business centers this year. That’s a blip on the radar screen, but it’s a start. And if it goes well, Servcorp could be in position to expand much more rapidly in 2011.
If you visit Servcorp’s Web site, you’ll notice the “Find a Location” pull down menu now includes “Chicago, IL.” Here’s the company’s description of its newest location:
“Situated in the West End of the famous “Loop” precinct in Chicago’s vibrant downtown business district, the brand new 155 North Wacker is a prominent 46 floor tower, and an exclusive business address. Located close to major banks, businesses, finance and lifestyle amenities, 155 North Wacker is in an elite neighbourhood of high-end retail, boutique hotels and fine dining options. This highly-sought-after location is conveniently located on the northeast corner of North Wacker Drive and Randolph Street, and just minutes away Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) trains, Metra, subway and bus transport services. Servcorp’s 42nd floor boasts breath-taking views of the Chicago city skyline and Lake Michigan.”
A savvy Servcorp is offering an opening special. If you sign up for a virtual office online in March you get two months at half price.
Will Servcorp hit a homerun in Chicago? Or will driving brand awareness be a major challenge in a city where Regus dominates?

What news! So it’s no longer talk. I wonder what pace Servcorp will run at and where they will open their next serviced office space. Chicago seems like a great place to start because business people there are familiar with the concept moreso than in a Topeka, Kansas. It’s interesting that Regus is looking to go into suburbs while Servcorp appears to be planning to hit the major metros.

I think Servcorp is just spreading its wings because there’s opportunity in key markets around the world for serviced offices and virtual offices these days. I am not sure anyone in Chicago, other than international travelers, is familiar with Servcorp. But that might not be much of a problem so long as they get the word out. It seems they have a strategic location in a nice building. That’s about half the battle.

If Servcorp are doing so well, why not ask why they have just laid off 15 staff in the past two months, from their Sydney operations?
It appears they have miscalculated growth and a number of locations have not matured as quickly as expected, resulting in a number of retrenchments being made to recoop losses.
