Regus Opens Serviced Office Center in Seattle-Tacoma Airport
Published June 8th, 2009 by Jennifer LeClaire
With so much focus on the Businessword membership packages – and with the just-inked strategic alliance between Regus and Virgin Atlantic – I suppose I should have seen this one coming.
Regus opened a new Business Center Express in the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac). This is a great example of Regus going where its customers are and ups the ante for business traveller convenience in the serviced office industry. Ultimately, instead of sitting in terminals or even business lounges in the airport, Regus customers that fly through Seattle can enjoy a full suite of services.
“Our new SeaTac Regus Business Center Express is perfectly suited for today’s business traveler,” says Sande Golgart, Regus vice president for the West Region. “It provides them with a convenient, state-of-the-art work environment, complete with all of the amenities and business support services they need to remain productive while at the airport.”
A Business Traveler’s Dream
This is a harried, on-deadline business traveler’s dream come true. Although Regus has done this in other locations, SeaTac is a busy airport with heavy business traveler foot traffic that needed this solution. The new center is located on Concourse C and offers business travellers a comfortable, professional working environment. Business travellers can tap into an open-style business bar complete with flat-panel computer terminals and wireless Internet access.
Beyond the contemporary work environment, the center includes parcel shipping services, and business-grade copiers, printers and faxes. The center even features an extensive retail section with the latest laptop, PDA and mobile phone accessories, is staffed with a trained on-site team to provide technical and product knowledge support.
Golgart says travelers can also buy digital cameras, laptops and consumer electronics. How brilliant! This adds yet another revenue stream to the Regus brand. Think about it. Have you ever forgot your battery charger at the office and desperately need to stay wired to your partners and customers? Regus solves that problem with this retail center.
“No one else can cater to the business traveller’s every need in such a cost-effective, easily accessible manner,” Golgart says. “The new center offers a full range of the latest workplace tools and resources that will allow our clients to maximize productivity during their travels.”
Biding Travelling Time
Golgart may be right. I’ve seen some makeshift Internet cafes in my travels, but nothing like what Regus has to offer. The new center is open to the public and workstations are available for use in as little as 15-minute increments. Regus didn’t say how much it is charging for those 15 minute increments, but I can tell you that someone who’s desperate to use the facilities won’t blink at $1 a minute. I expect the cost to be somewhere in that range.
Of course, Regus Businessworld clients get discounts on workstation usage and accessories. Regus has another LapTop Lane location at SeaTac in the North Satellite Concourse. The company currently has five Regus Business Center Express/LapTop Lane locations across the United States, including Salt Lake City, Cincinnati and Atlanta. I expect to see Regus strike more deals with airports in the coming quarters.

Apparently this “express model” is working well for Regus in the other airport locations or it wouldn’t be expanding. I’d love to see a line item on Regus’ earnings report to show how much revenue it gains from this mini serviced office space. It seems like a very strategic expansion strategy, but I wonder if it pays off through actual revenue or just branding.

They say location is everything. As I see it, Regus has a built in audience at this location. I didn’t know before now that Regus had these express serviced office centers in airports. Seattle is a great choice for the reasons you cited in the article. If you notice, they have chosen some of the busiest airports to put in these business centers. I wonder where is next?

I haven’t seen a Regus business center in an airport either. At first, I thought this was the first one. I wonder, though, if Regus is taking on a burden in this economy by combining a consumer electronics retail outlet with a serviced office space?
Perhaps business travelers are less affected… I mean, if you have an important conference call and your phone is lost or broken, you may have no choice but to buy a new one on the spot. Same with a laptop.

Another smart move by Regus. I bet they are paying sky-high rent to bring serviced office centers to these airports — pun intended. These business centers should see plenty of foot traffic. Like anything, the marketing will be important. I am guessing Concourse C must be the busiest at Seattle. Good news for business travelers who need office space on the go.

Service is what it’s all about for the mobile workforce. If I can print my files, fax some paperwork, plug in my laptop to tap into GoToMeeting and charge my phone, I’m happy. If I can get a replacement charger for the one I left in the hotel room, I’m happier. Regus should see plenty of traffic from its target audience of business travelers.
