Regus Opens 1,000th Location in Mauritius

When we got yesterday’s news that Regus opened a new serviced office complex in Chicago, we all speculated about when and where Regus would open its 1,000th facility. We wondered if the executive office suites giant would open a new office space in the U.S. or in some foreign land. We wondered if the workspace solutions company would celebrate with a lot of fanfare. Today, we don’t have to wonder anymore.

Without further ado, Regus has opened its 1,000th business center in Port Louis, Mauritius. Almost 20 years to the day since Regus first opened its first serviced office facility in Brussels, Belgium, Mauritius will go down in Regus history as a major milestone for the global firm. Regus now serves more than 500,000 customers in 76 territories.

“In reaching this historic landmark we have, over the last 20 years, had to open a center every week,” says Regus CEO Mark Dixon. “This has only been possible because of the hard work and dedication of our people and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them all, both past and present, in helping us get to where we are today.”

The newest Regus center is located in Ebene, 10 kilometers from the island’s capital of Port Louis. The serviced office facility will be based in Cybercity, a prestigious corporate complex. Cybercity is home to multinational corporations and is considered the country’s information technology hub. Regus says its clients will benefit from a business-ready environment, including fully furnished and equipped offices, meeting rooms, a business lounge and administrative support staff.

As Regus sees it, the current economic crisis and the rise of the mobile and home-based worker is forcing companies to re-evaluate their workplace needs and ask themselves if they have the right mix of space. Dixon says the world is in the cusp of a workplace revolution that will see fixed office workers become the exception not the norm.

“For decades companies have struggled to accurately forecast their workplace needs,” Dixon says. “As a result, on any given day something in the region of 50 percent of office space sits empty, while the other fifty percent is being utilized for functions that could be performed anywhere. The way people work is changing forever and Regus centers, such as this one in Mauritius, are at the forefront of this revolution.”

Dixon says Regus is not going to rest on its Laurels. The company is already actively working on the next 1,000 centers. Although he did not indicate the time line for opening the next serviced office space, he did share the location of the next opening: Beaver Creek, Ohio.

“Be it Mauritius or Monaco, Milwaukee or Manila we are redefining the world of work, offering business of all sizes flexible, innovative cost effective and inspiring spaces in which to meet, work and collaborate,” Dixon says.

Interesting. Doesn’t look like much fanfare to me. That’s a pretty big deal. Certainly, Regus must be having some major grand opening celebration for this new serviced office space. I don’t even know where Mauritius is. Must be near Belgium. I don’t see the significance of this as the 1,000th location.

Regus just keeps pushing. It certainly won’t take the company another 20 years to roll out with another 1,000 serviced office facilities. At some point, I would expect Regus to do some acquisitions of some profitable executive office suites companies in markets where it hasn’t yet penetrated. This is definitely a noteworthy milestone.

I’ve noticed these so-called Cybercities springing up all over the world. It’s this concept of a high-tech park. It’s interesting that Regus is located in a cybercity complex. I have to say, it does make sense to offer serviced office space in that setting. Regus could pursue that as a strategy in and of itself in emerging markets around the world.

As much as I have traveled, I’ve never actually noticed a Regus. Of course I typically don’t go into corporate business centers looking for the sign, either. My point is, even with 1,000 Regus serviced office centers, that’s not much. Think about how many McDonald’s there are in your home town alone.
