OfficeLinks Launches Coworking in Willis Tower, Offers Free Fridays
Published August 20th, 2009 by Jennifer LeClaire
We were one of the first to bring you the news that OfficeLinks was opening executive office suites in the Sears Tower (AKA The Willis Tower. Now, news is breaking that the provider of ready-to-use offices and meeting rooms is launching a new product: coworking offices.
In a move to lock into one of the hottest trends in officing today, OfficeLinks is introducing this product to help entrepreneurs lower office space costs while providing enterprise-grade technology and workplace infrastructure that aims to enable and inspires collaboration. But the news gets even better. If you want to try coworking on for size, you can do it for free on Fridays at the company’s locations in Chicago and New York.
“The current economic climate has created a new category of mobile professionals who are demanding affordable, business-ready places to work, on-demand,” says Harsh Mehta, COO and executive vice president of OfficeLinks. “We launched OfficeLinks Co-Working product based on strong customer demand.”
This is an interesting proposition indeed. OfficeLinks isn’t going overboard when it describes its latest initiative as an “unprecedented opportunity” for workers to leverage its fully-furnished and modern offices on a transactional basis while simultaneously networking with like-minded business people. OfficeLinks is definitely on the cutting-edge with this new offering.
Coworking is an emerging trend that offers work-at-home professionals, independent consultants and those who travel frequently, a business-ready alternative to coffee shops and cafes. Coworking also provides a viable solution to the isolation experienced by many telecommuters. What’s more, the social and collaborative nature of coworking spaces can generate positive synergies not found in independent or home-based offices.
“We also recognize that people who are not familiar with this leading-edge workplace concept may want to take a test drive first. As such we are offering Co-Working Fridays free through the summer so that they may try our next-generation workspace and experience whether Co-Working is right for them,” Mehta says. “We are confident they will enjoy the ability to access our professional workspace with the same ease they would a coffee shop or hotel.”
If you’d like to take Mehta and OfficeLinks up on a free trial run of its coworking space — which includes access to modern workstations, fast and free WIFI, and refreshments and snacks to fuel the brain — call (646) 512 - 5700. Beginning on August 28, there will be 10 no-charge spaces available. When you call, be sure to tell them aBetterOffice.com sent you.

Wow, wow and wow. I’ve been waiting for the serviced office industry to catch on to this trend. I am not sure if OfficeLinks competitors will jump on this bandwagon or not. But I am sure the Reguses of the world are going to be paying close attention to how OfficeLinks fares with its latest roll out. The Free Fridays is a great marketing gimmick.

Coworking in the Sears Tower. I bet the developers of that building never imagined such a thing. Such is progress. I am betting Officelinks tested the market before they decided to do this. I am also betting they have extra space they need to fill in their serviced office line up. I am not sure what the coworking spaces will cost, and if they do better by renting more of them more often than a stable executive office suites tenant… this is definitely a cool offering, though.

The CEO said they did this coworking deal based on strong consumer demand. That’s probably true. It takes a lot of energy to organize this type of thing. It’s not just a matter of saying you are going to offer coworking and moving a few tables around. Officelinks is a smart company. They wouldn’t do this if they weren’t pretty sure they’d fill the spots. I’d love to hear some feedback from folks who try it out there.

Here’s the clincher: “The current economic climate has created a new category of mobile professionals who are demanding affordable, business-ready places to work, on-demand.” Officelinks is probably doing this because they need to offer a lower-cost option to the mix to keep their executive office suites facilities filled up. Everybody wins. Great idea.

The free Friday promotion is a good one. Many may not have ever heard of coworking and they certainly don’t want to plunk down money to try out something that may not be a fit. Others may have heard of coworking but just want to see what the experience is like in a mixed environment. This isn’t a pure bred coworking facility, so the culture may be somewhat different.
