Coworking Trend Makes Way Across U.S.
Published August 31st, 2010 by Jennifer LeClaire
The coworking office space movement continues to build momentum. I haven’t reported on this trend in a while, so I did a scan of recent headlines to come up with a round up that offers the latest moves in this alternative office space market.
One of the most recent publicized coworking opening is St. Louis Coworking. Kasey Joyce at Channel 5 in St. Lois reported on the new office space downtown that rents out desks and workspaces by the day or month.
“It gives you an opportunity to make your ideas move,” St. Louis Coworking Manager Jenn Cloud told the reporter. “It gets really hard, we’re hearing from people to just keep pulling ideas out of your own head. People are just saying that their three cats are just not giving them the feedback that they need. Sometimes just the human interaction, the warm bodies is helpful.”
Then there’s The Vault in Louisville, Co. John Aguilar, a reporter at the Daily Camera, called this coworking facility the antidote to the isolation of telecommuting. The Vault just opened its doors in June after a bank moved out of a building that apparently offered the perfect mix of office space.
“Known in the industry as a coworking facility, the Vault rents workspace to mobile professionals looking for anything from a secure office to temporary desk space to nothing more than a vibrant place to hang out and exchange ideas. It incorporates elements of a traditional office and a casual college dormitory, infusing a communal sensibility into the work atmosphere that encourages people to mingle and talk,” Aguilar writes.
Then there’s Connect113, a new coworking office space in Alexandria, Va. Connect113 is a dynamic workspace designed to connect you with the business tools necessary to get things done. Members have 24/7 access to Internet, printers, scanners, copiers, fax, comfortable chairs, conference rooms, and the kitchen.
“There’s only a certain length of time before a Starbucks gets a little old…working at home there are only so many days or weeks before you just say ‘I’ve got to get outside of these walls,’” Rob Kaufman, co-founder of Connect113, told TBD.
Finally, Milwaukee, Wisc. is seeing coworking come to its city via Bucketworks. Bucketworks offers a variety of co-working environments, so you can work on your business, side project, non-profit program without distraction. Members can use permanent or hot desks with power and high-speed internet, meeting rooms and conference rooms for private and client conversations, and tap into amenities like high-speed internet, indoor parking, and kitchen with rooftop deck.
That’s it for now on the coworking office space trend. If you have recently opened a coworking facility and didn’t see your company’s name in this article, reach out to us and let us know what you are doing.

I love the coworking stories. Thanks for the update. It looks like there’s been a lot of growth in this sector. These coworking facilities are springing up as fast as Regus facilities — or faster. I don’t think executive office suites providers have anything to worry about. It’s not the same target audience. The growth of both sectors just demonstrates the demand for alternative office space.

I bet there’s a coworking facility opening up somewhere in the United States every week. They all don’t launch web sites or generate local news coverage. This is a bona fide trend, and it’s great to see it spreading across the States so rapidly. I am surprised it took coworking so long to gain momentum. But the more coworking office space that opens, the more visibility this alternative gets and the more it grows.
