Coalition of Office Space Providers Partners with NYC EDC

The Coalition of Office Space Providers (COSP) has partnered with New York City’s Economic Development Corporation to help support Manhattan’s finance service sector. Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the partnership last month, and the fruit of the collaboration is already beginning to appear.

COSP’s civic-minded office space providers aim to do their part to help New York City become the friendliest city in the United States for new start-ups and entrepreneurs. The group plans to do this in cooperation with New York City through services that include training, placement, and support. COSP members can accommodate about 700 people with office space rates at up to 40 percent below the market value.

COSP members, which currently include:

Sunshine Suites
eEmerge
TechSpace
Nutopia
New Work City
Workspace Offices
green desk
Executive Suites at the Hippodrome

These companies will offer a variety of services to start-ups to support their office space needs, from shared and coworking space to private offices in strategic Manhattan buildings to studio spaces. Start-ups can tap into receptionist services, conference rooms, office equipment and other amenities without the typical investments associated with launching a business the old-fashioned way.

COSP membership has a mind toward the growth of its clients. The group will help start-ups when it’s time to move from a smaller workspace to a larger office building by cutting through the red tape with transitions to other COSP members.

Discount office space aside, the COSP programs will offer start-ups access to capital through events and space offerings that attract investors. Start-ups can have meetings with potential investors in member conference rooms. COSP has also reached out to angel investors willing to make microloans.

A “Give Back” mentoring program will offer 30-minute lectures on various subjects of interest to start-ups. Finally, start-ups will have access to services like health insurance, hotel rooms and courier services at heavily discounted rates.

Office operators that would like to join the COSP must have at least one location in New York City, receive two endorsements from current COSP members and pay annual admissions fees based on a percentage of NYC revenues.  For more information, contact any of the current members.

What a way for the serviced office industry to take leadership. This collection of office providers really offers a diverse range of options for start-ups. I am really glad to see an effort like this in New York City. This sort of office space coalition is something that other large metros, like Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles, may want to take notice of.

I think the revenue sharing arrangement might scare some serviced office space providers away. But I if this is organized right, it could drive so much revenue while also helping entrepreneurs tap into affordable office space that it won’t matter. You might think of it like a marketing program in some sense. I am also glad to see this Coalition of Office Space Providers.

This is the type of initiative that’s going to bring a lot of attention to serviced offices, flexible offices, shared offices and the like. I’m sure COPA’s members are well aware of that. This is a win-win for everybody, and those are just the kind of partnerships that tend to succeed.
