Barrister Executive Suites Goes Green in San Diego
Published December 30th, 2009 by Jennifer LeClaire
If you thought 2009 was the year of green office space, stay tuned…I expect to see 2010 trump last year by a long shot. From recycling bins to green furniture and beyond, executive suites companies are looking for ways to promote sustainable practices. Barrister Executive Suites is among them.
Barrister rents office space from Hines, a leader in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Program. In June, Hines announced a new tenant program for companies taking up office space at its Golden Eagle Plaza in downtown San Diego.
Dubbed HinesGO (Green Office), the program challenges tenants to go green. The Golden Eagle Plaza building was awarded the Energy Star Label in 2007 and has been making ongoing efforts in sustainability since then.
Hines and Barrister are now reporting significant progress that should encourage other serviced office companies to follow suit in 2010. Specifically, 80 percent of Hines’ tenants at the San Diego location embraced the green office program with open arms, including launching initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint.
For Barrister Executive Suites’ part, the company has earned more than 70 Leaf Credits to qualify for their Green Office designation for their office space on the 15th floor of the Golden Eagle Plaza Building. Barrister had to pass evaluation criteria in seven categories and earn points for implementing more sustainable alternatives such as energy efficient lighting, using “green” kitchen products, and purchasing recyclable office paper.
Amy Hicks, Suite Manager at for Barrister Executive Suites, says “green” offices are starting to play a major part in acquiring new tenants. “More and more, companies are adopting internal green policies for their business and considering that as part of their criteria when seeking new office space,” Hicks says. “Barrister Executives Suites is proud to partner with a true ‘green’ leader within the commercial real estate industry.”

It’s great to see Barrister Executive Suites getting on the green bandwagon. Sounds like they bought into the green office space vision of Hines full force, which makes sense. In California, especially, I think office space is quickly going green. California seems to be leading the charge. Congrats to Barrister’s San Diego serviced office location for the accomplishment.

HinesGo is a solid green office space program. Barrister Executive Suites was smart to get involved in this. These days, green office space is a great marketing tool. Not everybody cares, but it doesn’t hurt. It can only help. Green serviced office space should be a major trend in 2010 as the overall commercial real estate industry continues moving in this direction.
