Barrister Executive Suites Expand in So. California
Published December 23rd, 2008 by Jennifer LeClaire
Barrister Executive Suites is gearing up for a profitable 2009. Indeed, Barrister, which describes itself as a plug-n-play office space provider, sees gold in the hills of Southern California’s office market.
With strategic growth in mind, the company has announced it will expand its footprint by opening a new location at 5023 North Parkway Calabasas in Calabasas, Calif.
“Given the current economic climate, our offices are a much more attractive option for many businesses,” says Carrie Gates, Vice President of Leasing at Barrister Executive Suites. “We allow clients the option to rent by the month or by the year.”
What’s Driving the Demand?
Barrister Executive Suites attributes the increased demand for executive office suites to businesses looking for ways to manage their overhead expense and decrease their financial risk.
That is a running theme in the executive office suite market today.
Although serviced offices have always offered value, the current economy gives serviced offices an opportunity to shine in the broader office rental market, especially in traditionally more expensive regions like Southern California.
“By taking advantage of our flexible lease terms and low start up costs, clients reduce their financial risk,” Gates says. “It’s a much smarter way to work and to run a business.”
Location, Location, Location
Of course, like any other type of office, location is a vital factor. Barrister seems to have done a fine job with its site selection efforts.
Calabasas is located in the technology corridor along the 101 freeway. The city supports strong housing, retail, and business markets and offers a scenic community with a unique mix of pocket neighborhoods, gated communities and blue ribbon schools.
Growing economic pressure and technology advancements are pushing many companies to move their offices closer to home to reduce commuting time of the local workforce. And Calabasas is a business-friendly city that makes doing business affordable.
All of these factors are key selling points for Calabasas, according to Dorthy Bright, President and COO of Barrister Executives Suites.
“Reduced business and property taxes and lower cost of office space make Calabasas one of the most economical cities to operate a business,” Bright says. “The company estimates that businesses can save 30 percent to 40 percent over other areas of Los Angeles County where prices are much higher.”
A Look at the Inside
Barrister’s new Parkway Calabasas location offers some interesting amenities that make it more than your standard serviced office. For example, the Calabasas location dons a spacious training room large enough to accommodate up to 100 people, an employee lounge with outdoor garden seating area, and beautifully appointed common area space.
Each office also comes equipped with business amenities, such as a professional receptionist, personalized telephone answering, conference rooms and meeting space, as well as mail sorting and delivery, coffee/beverage service. Clients also have access to state-of-the-art office equipment such as telecommunications equipment, photocopiers, fax machines, and high speed Internet access.
“Our office space is plug-n-play and comes equipped with everything a client needs to run their business more efficiently,” Gates says. “By letting us handle their basic business needs, clients can be more productive, have more time to focus on their core business, and reduce their office footprint.”
Barrister Executive Suites is a name you can trust. Barrister has been flying its office rental flag for more than 40 years. The firm has 23 locations in Southern California and has branded itself as a flexible, cost-effective office solution with full-time, part-time and virtual office packages that can be custom tailored to suit each client’s needs.

Barrister Executive Suites is a well-known name in the Southern California market. It’s good to see the company expanding. Calabasas is a strong choice. Entrepreneurs can keep their costs down without giving up fairly easy access to bigger cities in the region. Jennifer made the point of the high cost of office rentals in Southern California. Barrister is well-positioned to compete with traditional offices as companies pay closer attention to their bottom lines.

What caught my attention about Barrister’s announcement was the 30 percent to 40 percent savings estimate over office rentals in Los Angeles. That’s more than significant in any economy. I saw the images, and this is a top quality facility just like Barrister’s facilities across the rest of Southern California. A very strategic move for a veteran in the serviced office space.

The last part of that sentence “reduce commuting time” could also see the rise of virtual office providers. It’s not a new trend, but there is fear in the hearts of some businesses that haven’t worked through a recession before and that could cause some structural changes in officing.

When I read the list of amenities this serviced office in Southern California offers, it amazes me. I mean, I’m familiar with the executive office suite business model. But every time I consider what businesses get for the dollar it still amazes me. Barrister’s clients have access to “state-of-the-art office equipment such as telecommunications equipment, photocopiers, fax machines, and high speed Internet access.” Sure, a business could lease all of those things but it’s risk and monthly output.

Beyond the strategic location, Barrister Executive Suites is tapping into the productivity vein. There is plenty of competition in the Southern California market for serviced office rentals. But there doesn’t seem to be much competition in Calabasas, and the productivity message resonates in a down economy where companies are looking for new opportunities to do more with less.

I don’t see much different about this serviced office space than what most others offer. Barrister seems thorough in its offerings — and it certainly has found its sweet spot in Calabasas and other California areas. But so far as communicating the differences between their office rentals and the competition’s, I don’t see a major difference. I could say that about most serviced office space providers, I suppose. I am waiting for someone to break out of the box with some attention-getting marketing.
