Above & Beyond Finds Increased Demand for Flexible Office Space in Montclair
Published November 2nd, 2009 by Jennifer LeClaire
Although some are prophesying the end of the recession, other companies are still laying off employees. That means more out-of-work execs looking to start new businesses in the fourth quarter of 2009.
Above & Beyond, an executive office suite in Montclair, New Jersey, is benefiting from the trend. The company reports a dramatic uptick in activity from both business owners and individuals looking for flexible office space and administrative services.
“The economic downturn has impacted a variety of organizations and people,” says Donna Miller, president and founder of Above & Beyond, Inc. “Large companies are coming to us for administrative support while individuals, some who were laid off, are looking for assistance to start-up their own new businesses.”
Above & Beyond rents executive suites at its 26 Park Street location in Downtown Montclair. The serviced office company targets small business owners looking to expand from a home office into turnkey office rentals on a full- or part-time basis. The headquarters offer easy access to Routes 46, 3 and 280 and the Garden State Parkway. The serviced offices are within walking distance of banking, shopping, dining and a NJ Transit direct train to Manhattan.
Amenities include 24-hour access to a furnished, windowed office, personalized telephone answering, incoming mail handling, a common reception area, and conference room usage with secure wireless Internet. Tenants get private parking at the building, with nearby public parking for guests.
As far as services, Above & Beyond offers marketing and sales support, Internet services, direct mail, meeting and event planning, project coordination, and bookkeeping and financial support.
“Clients are impressed by our stylish, professional suites, the cost efficiencies and the flexibility we provide,” Miller says. “In every case, our goal is to help businesses keep fixed overhead down and give the owners and managers the time they need to focus on their business while we manage their offices.”

It doesn’t look like there’s much else going in Montclair as far as serviced office space goes. I think Above & Beyond might have the market cornered, or at least this looks like the largest and most well-known executive suites company there. I hadn’t found any others. They also have virtual office space.

Not everybody can afford an office space in Manhattan. With Above & Beyond offering quick access to a train into the city, this could be a good location for some who live in the area and need to make frequent or even semi-frequent trips to New York. This seems like a strong outfit that cares about start-ups.

Are they saying every office has windows? That’s pretty cool, though I don’t know that Montclair has the views of a Manhattan office space. Still, it’s always nice to have a window. I am not familiar with Montclair or its office space scene, so I have no idea if this is a new trend in town or if the business community is familiar with serviced offices. Doesn’t look like there’s much going on there, though.

Ms. Miller says, “Our goal is to help businesses keep fixed overhead down and give the owners and managers the time they need to focus on their business while we manage their offices.” I think that’s a great approach and if Above & Beyond lives by this philosophy they should be very successful on the Montclair office space scene.
