The Evolution of Office Space
Published March 23rd, 2009 by Jennifer LeClaire
There is a fascinating article over at Wired.com today, a discussion around how the evolution of office spaces reflects changing attitudes toward work. Cliff King writes, “Since the dawn of the white-collar age, office designs have cycled through competing demands: openness versus privacy, interaction versus autonomy.”
Looking for office space in the United States?
The article goes on to trace the evolution, which began with Taylorism’s quest for efficiency in 1904, then moved on to Burolandschaft in the 1960s to incorporate socialist views into the workplace. Next, Herman Miller fostered the Action office in 1968. It featured flexible workspaces. We find Cube Farms by 1980 and stumble upon virtual offices in 1994.
However, the definition of virtual office in this case isn’t a phone number and a prestigious address with a receptionist and mail forwarding services. It was a non-organized attempt at flexibility that reportedly backfired. According to Wired magazine, today we are in the age of the Networked office that tries to offer flexibility and privacy at the same time.
What approach is best, if any, and where do we go next? Where does the executive office suites industry fit into this evolution? And will coworking dominate the entrepreneurial workplace of the future? Do these options exist in your city? We’d like to hear what you think.
