The City of New York is comprised of 5 boroughs and has a population of just over 8 million people. The metropolitan area of New York, which encompasses 3 states, has nearly 20 million people. It is considered one of the most powerful and wealthiest cities in the world; in 2005 the metropolitan area’s gross product was estimated to be $1.3 trillion.

Real estate is one of New York’s biggest industries, and commercial real estate in New York is among the most expensive in the world. There is over 50 million square feet of office space in New York, with office space in midtown Manhattan being a leading area.

Manhattan is composed of Downtown, Midtown and Uptown, which is subdivided by Central Park into the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side. Above Central Park is Harlem.

Here is a quick review of some of the significant areas of Manhattan:

Midtown Manhattan spans from 14th Street to 59th Street and from the Hudson River to the East River. The core of Midtown is 31st Street to 59th Street between 3rd Avenue and 9th Avenue. The Plaza District is the famed area due to its highly valuable commercial real estate. Midtown real estate includes the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the MetLife Building and the Bank of America Tower. Also 3 of the 4 major TV networks reside in this area, with famed Rockefeller Plaza playing a significant role.

Other significant areas in terms of office space are Chelsea, Times Square, Flatiron, Union Square and Penn Plaza.
