Techspace is rockin’ in Chelsea with Spin Magazine

I recently spent a couple of days in New York City visiting lots of serviced office space. I estimated that I went by 75 serviced offices in Midtown down to Wall Street alone - I didn’t even make it above 60th Street, nor to any of the other boroughs. With so many offices to feature, I decided on just one - Techspace’s newest office rental in Chelsea. It’s not the luxury of Synergy Workplaces nor the prestige of Virgo Business Center’s Empire State Building office space. However, it’s got something that neither of those places have - great contemporary design, some of the best on site tech services I’ve seen in serviced office space and a high energy client in Spin Magazine.

  • Techspace's reception on the 8th floor in Chelsea
  • Conference room at Techspace is easily converted into a training room
  • Techspace hallway with a view into team room with many workstations.

I walked in late in the day expecting to see little activity, but the whole 8th floor was bustling with energy, which is always a good sign with an executive office. As Brendan McGee, the manager of all three New York locations, gave me a tour of the facility, I noticed one company name on many offices. Spin Magazine was there on a somewhat temporary basis. Since the location had just opened earlier this year, it’s always helpful to get a big client early on. It obviously improves the bottom line, but it also brings with it a much better tour experience. Imagine an office where every door is closed or each office is empty versus lots of people in the hallway, and lots of full offices all designed and furnished very creatively (as you would expect from the employees of Spin Magazine). It’s easy to imagine which is more appealing.

But the reason I’m featuring Techspace here is not because of Spin. As I mentioned earlier, I chose them because of their interesting interior design and their tech services. As I’ve often said on aBetterOffice.com, differentiation is important in an office suite. It helps companies stand out. They focus on most of the same services that other suites focus on, but their name says it all: if you want outstanding technical services above and beyond internet connection and a phone system, Techspace is a great choice. They have a dedicated onsite IT team, plus rackspace in their facilities for hosting and management of websites and applications.

And as you can see in the video (from the quieter 14th floor) and photos in this post, the space is nicely designed - perhaps it’s not for everyone, but for tech and creative companies, or if you’re just looking for something a little different, it can be an interesting and inspiring space.

Techspace. This is a great find! Of all the serviced offices in New York City you walked by, this one stood out…not because of its luxury office amenities or its prestigious address, but because it has character, style and tech services. The name says it all. If you want to rent a high-tech office in Chelsea, Techspace makes it clear where to go.

What I like about this Chelsea serviced office is the flexibility of the layout. I haven’t seen much of Google’s offices, other than a few news clips, but I imagine it as high-tech looking with multi-purpose rooms. These Chelsea executive office rentals offer two outstanding features in that regard: the hallway that offers a view into a team room that hosts a number of workstations and a conference room that can be converted to a training room. This is smart design that accommodates for the changing needs of the office renters who inhabit Techspace.

Looks like a fun space. I like the garage door they are using as a way to open up the room into a larger space. That’s something I thought about using at thinkspace but it didn’t have the sound insulation value that I was looking for. I have conference rooms that are side-by-side.

Peter makes a good point about sound insulation. That’s more important to some businesses than others. But it’s a major consideration in meeting rooms and executive office suites. Noisy neighbors can be a real hassle, whether you are in a condo or an office rental in Houston. It seems Techspace’s target audience is more open and flowing than some others. So this flexible office space probably works great in Chelsea.
